Build a Website

Whether you plan to build a website for your own amusement or for business, the whole process has now become very simple. A number of great tools and tutorials are freely available for this purpose. However, before you start building your website, here are some tips that you should keep in mind to ensure that the website generates interest and a steady stream of visitors.

First, ask yourself the following questions:

  • What is the purpose of the website – whether it is a personal hobby, for business on the internet, a place to share ideas or something else?
  • How do you plan to reach out to your target audience and what are you offering them once they come to the site?
  • How much time can you spend each day on building the website?

Once you answer these questions, you will have a clearer idea of what you will need to do to build a website and make it successful.

The first step is to plan your website – choosing the theme, gathering or creating content to fit the theme, building an inventory of keywords associated with the topics on your website, and so on. Let’s take these steps one at a time:

    1. Choosing the right theme: The theme of your website decides everything else about it. You not only need to come up with a topic but also decide on the kind of tone in which that topic will be presented to the visitors. A pre requisite for a theme is that you should be knowledgeable about it. If you are going to present information to people on the theme, then you have to be prepared to write about it, and unless you have detailed knowledge about it, you will not be able to engage the visitors.

    2. List out keywords for the topic: Keywords are the words a user would enter on a search engine when looking for information on a certain topic. It could be a single word or a group of words, and the wider your knowledge of the subject, the easier it will be for you to identify these keywords. The trick here is to list as many as possible, and then trim the list down to about 50 keywords that seem most relevant.

    3. Research online for keywords: Many websites come up every day on a variety of topics, which means that online competition is increasing day by day. Therefore, you have to decide how broad or narrow the scope of your website is going to be. If it is too broad, then you will not be able to cover the whole range of topics and if it is too narrow then you might miss many related topics. Online keyword research helps you figure out how many competing websites offer similar content to your site and allow you to figure out what are the most sought after topics. By using tools like Google Sandbox, you can eliminate topics which you feel do not have sufficient potential.

After these three steps, you will have all the basic information you need for your website. Start putting together the layout, content and any other elements you wish to include. Stay focused on the theme that you have chosen, and do not waste your time in exploring other possibilities. You can be confident that you will not have to regret or put in rework at a later stage if you follow these steps correctly when you build a website.
