The affiliate marketing is essentially getting paid to tell other people about products. In many ways it's like telling someone where you bought your stereo but when they go to the store and buy it the store would give you a piece of the sale. You would essentially sign up for an affiliate account with the company selling what you want to promote, and you get a special URL that you would use to tell people about the product. You can promote it on forums, in signatures, and on your own site built to tell them about how cool the product is and how useful it is before linking them to an already built sales page that will talk them into buying it as well as taking their order. Your part is done the second they click your link, and if they purchase anything from that site you get a piece of the action!

AdSense sites are a bit different but work in much the same way mechanically. You get paid when people click the ads on your page but not when they purchase the products on the other end. This is a way to make money through clicks called "leads" or potential customers for the advertiser. The beauty of this format is you get paid even if they don't buy, but the payout is much less.
